The public is invited to get a close-up look at these tiny travelers as staff and volunteers from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory capture, band, weigh, measure, and release them as part of long-term studies of the bird life of this vital migration route.

Note: Fort Huachuca is an active military installation and specific entrance requirements are enforced. US citizens may enter the post through either the East Gate . As the Spanish extended their empire out of Mexico, they established a Presidio (fortress) along the San Pedro River. Construction began in 1776. Learn about the Presidio and what happened there to make the Spanish abandon the fort in 1780.
A trained docent will lead the walk and provide information on this historic site. The walk is about three miles (round trip) and will take about three hours. Be prepared for the weather with good shoes, water, and a hat.

Plant an Agave and Feed the Bats with UsLend a hand at a National Park site in your own backyard! Volunteers are needed to help plant 1500 baby agaves at the Coronado National Memorial. The agaves have been relocated from the area of the border fence and will help to provide habitat for the endangered lesser long-nosed bat. Events will include a guided bird walk with Huachuca Audubon Society, a speaker from Arizona Fish and Game, and a native plant ID walk. Volunteers of all abilities are needed - if you don't do shoveling, come out anyway and help distribute water or fill other needs. Gloves, tools and refreshments provided.

Hummingbird Banding at San Pedro HouseUp to 10 species of hummingbirds use the green corridor of the San Pedro River as a freeway between their tropical winter retreats and their northern nesting grounds. The public is invited to get a close-up look at these tiny travelers as staff and volunteers from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory capture, band, weigh, measure, and release them as part of long-term studies of the bird life of this vital migration route.
